February 5th Backyard Update

A brand new month means a brand new virtue for kids in the Backyard on Sunday mornings. This month, we’re tackling honor…the verb not the noun. Honor is letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. It starts with honoring God (worship) and then honoring others (respect). Be sure to pick up or download the take homes so that you and your kids can continue the learning at home each week. What we do with one hour on Sundays isn’t enough. It takes you being intentional, helping your kids learn Bible stories, Bible verses, and Bible truths each week.

So if we fill our minds with things that are true, right, noble, excellent, and admirable like Paul says, those are the things that will spill out of our lives. FORT: Articulate Week 3

Last Wednesday was a great night. Kids learned all about the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, the third part of the Trinity. Question: What do these things have in common?

Encouraging words

Answers: They are all representative of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit lights the path of God’s word so that we can follow Him. The Holy Spirit shows us where we sin (even the smallest ones). Once we see our sin, we can confess, repent, and be forgiven. The Holy Spirit also encourages us when we’re down, lonely, or discouraged. Ask your kids about what they learned and go over this week’s doctrines and verses with them!

Look up Proverbs 25:16. I bet you didn’t know that was in the Bible did you? This week’s lesson on Self-Control was about knowing when to stop. As parents, it’s our job to set appropriate limits for our kids for sure. But its also our job to help them learn to set appropriate limits for themselves. They will not alway be under our direct care and supervision. As we set boundaries, it’s important to teach kids why boundaries are important and help them know and set limits for themselves. That’s part of self-control. Parental controls are really important battles worth fighting but developing kids who know how to control themselves is what wins the war!

FORT:Articulate Week 2

Week 2 FORT:Articulate was so fun! Kirk Bullis, a missionary from China shared with us during arrival time. He showed pictures of what life is like in China, even some gross food he ate! Yuck!
Also, it was the first week for the FORT store. Kids can earn points to go shopping and get cool prizes! Every week children have the chance to memorize 5 truths and 5 verses. If they memorize all 10 things, they get 50 bonus points! The take homes for each week include all these things! Be sure to look at them with your child and encourage them to memorize, memorize, memorize!

We still need parent volunteers to stay and serve, even it’s only for a week or two! Email Nic Allen if this sounds like something you would like to do!

January 15th Kids Ministry Take Homes

This week’s SELF CONTROL focus was on controlling your tongue. You know the old adage, “sticks and stones may break my bones; but words will never hurt me.” We exposed that for the lie that it is this week in kids world. As much as we may try, words are powerful. God’s word even says so in Proverbs 12:18, “There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Not only can what we say hurt like a weapon. It can also bring comfort and healing. This week’s focus was on kids selecting their words carefully; using them to heal not hurt. Make that a whole family practice this week and beyond!

2nd Annual Daddy Daughter Ball

Join us for the 2^nd Annual Daddy Daughter Ball – Friday February 17 6pm at the WareHouse

Dads, treat your daughters to a night to remember and demonstrate to them the way they should be treated! It’s a Pretty in Pink winter ball for dads to celebrate their precious girls (ages 4 to 12). Last year, more than 100 daddy/daughter couples shared the special night. Tickets are $6 per person or $15 family max.

Here are 5 ways to make it a night she’ll always remember.

1. Get dressed up in your best! Not only will she love dressing up for the night, she’ll feel special when you do the same. No tux rental necessary. This isn’t the prom or your wedding day. Nice pants and a tie will be just fine. In case you haven’t worn one in a while, try this link for tie tying demos (http://www.tieanecktie.com/)

2. Leave the house for a while and come pick her up at the front door like a date! Do all the things your dad told you to do on a date (open doors, pull out chairs, etc.) as a demo for how she should be treated. When she’s older, she won’t want some guy honking the horn for her to run outside when she sees how special it is to be treated like a lady.

3. Do dinner before hand, just the two of you (or more of you if you have more than one daughter)! Light hors’dourves and dessert will be served at the ball. Use the dinner hour before as a way to spend even more time together. Take her to a restaurant that you wouldn’t normally go to and enjoy the occasion.

4. Bust a move in the Dads only dance contest! Who knows? You might even win. She might say she’s embarrassed but secretly, she’ll love having a dad who can let loose, act crazy, and wrangle the spotlight for a few moments.

5. Tell her over and over how pretty and how special she is and how much you LOVE spending time with her. Your daughter is going to grow up one day (very soon) and she’ll choose a guy to love her based on the love she’s experienced at home from her father. She’ll build her understanding on how she should be treated based on the way you treat her so use this night as a way to help build that foundation into her esteem and into her future.

Fort:Articulate last night was a blast! We are excited about our new season of Fort and learning truths about God! If you missed last night, it’s ok! We would love to have you join next week! Fort begins at 6pm on Wednesday.

The Take Home’s from each week include updates about what kids are learning and memory assignments. Learning your memory assignment earns you points. At the end of the quarter, points mean prizes.

We’re continuing our study of self-control and kids are learning. So far, it’s been neat to see how much kids remember week to week. We had record highs this week in the Backyard (328 kids birth through 6th grade). We also had a special guest. Former RHCC Intern Eric Humes stopped by to show the kids pictures and tell about his missionary experience in Guatemala. Add him to your family prayer time as he returns this week to continue working in the city of Antigua. Download this week’s material below and have fun continuing the learning at home.

January 1 – Sunday Morning Kids Ministry Take-Homes

Do you know Proverbs 25:28? By the end of the month, your kids will.

“A man who does not control his temper
is like a city whose wall is broken down.”

In ancient times, cities had walls for protection. In this totally truth-telling verse, wise King Solomon compares a man who loses his temper to a city without protection. When we are without protection, we may hurt others and we will always hurt ourselves. This month, kids are learning about self-control, the virtue of being able to live a life doing what you SHOULD do not necessarily what you WANT to do.
