Homosexuality?
It says that homosexuality is not okay in the Bible, but yet it says that God loves you for who you are. Why does this contradict? Because if you are homosexual, how does this apply?
“God loves you for who you are” is a common phrase that seems to be thrown around, but is nowhere to be found in the Bible. God is love – and Scripture is clear that he loves all people (John 3:16). Another common phrase that is similar is – “God hates the sin, not the sinner”. Both of these are saying the same thing – that God loves all people no matter what. While it is true that God’s love is unconditional, Scripture also teaches us that He is a God of hate, as well. “For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers (Psalm 5:4-5).” So what this Psalm is saying is that God not only hates sin, but also all people who do sin. That’s everyone.
Now let’s talk about homosexuality. All people are born into sin, and with a natural liking of sin (Genesis 8:21, Psalm 51:5). One of those sins that some are open to, for one reason or another, is homosexuality (Lev. 18:22, Lev. 20:13, 1 Cor. 6:9-10, Rom. 1:26-28, 1 Corinthians 6:9, 1 Timothy 1:10).
So, what we’re seeing is that the Bible teaches that God is love, and loves all people. Yet, he is also a hater not just of sin, but of all people who commit sin. How can God love the sinner, and hate the sinner at the same time?
Good question. And the answer is… (in my best Sunday school voice) “Jesus”! God sent His only Son to take all of the sins of those who believe in Him upon himself, this includes all sins and sinners, and gives us His righteousness so that we can be free. So, now when God looks at Christians, he sees Jesus’ righteousness, instead of all of our sins.
And the other answer is… God’s wrath! Yayyy! But seriously… God still hates those who do not turn from their sins to believe in His Son. So what happens to them? God is just, so he must punish sin. So, sinners who refuse to repent and turn from their evil ways, will spend an eternity in Hell, where God’s wrath is being poured out.
So, in the end – there is no contradiction here. God loves us all, but because we all fall short (Rom 3:23), we deserve his wrath. But thank goodness he is “slow to anger”, and “gracious”, sending His Son to save us!
