Student Ministry Update: November 29, 2011

Sunday Morning Small Groups

We’re three weeks into our six-week study on the book of Genesis. In this week’s lesson, we examined the account of Noah and the flood. We had an awesome time looking at the incredible trust Noah demonstrated in God, even when tasked with a seemingly impossible project. We challenged our students to have this same kind of faithful trust in God in their lives.

As you go through this week, consider finding opportunities to ask some of the following questions to generate some discussion with your teenager about trusting in God:

  • How do we know God is trustworthy?
  • How do we as a family show trust in God on a regular basis? What are some reasons we trust him?
  • What does our trust in God say to the world about God and his willingness to provide for his children?

Consider telling your child about a time you had to show great trust in God when you couldn’t be 100 percent certain of the outcome. Help your child see how God proved faithful.

Wednesday Night

Tomorrow night we continue our series called, “Do Something.” We will encourage students, through experiential worship, to open their eyes to the needs of the world. Everyday there are people in the world that need clothing, clean water, food, or medicine. As Christians we are called to do something about those needs no matter how much or little we can physically do. Many times we become numb to needs and go through life without addressing them. Jesus was clear about how we are to address the needs of the poor; it’s simple, we are to do our best to meet them.

Student Ministry Update: August 22, 2011

Student Ministry has hit the ground running. Our leaders and students are energized about this coming year and all the activities involved. We not only have small groups on Sunday’s, Wednesday night worship services, and fun outings, we also have events throughout the year.

One of those events is coming up on October 14-18. Our church will be going to Leslie County, KY for a missions trip. If you would like to attend that mission trip, you can either register online, or fill out an information card in the Backstage student area at the information desk.

This past Sunday, our students began a small group teaching series called, “Savior and King.” The big question for the day was, “why did Jesus come into the world?” On the surface this seems like a pretty straight forward answer. Students and adults alike will say; give life to the world, save the world, do God’s will, and/or provide eternal life. All are great answers and correct, but mean nothing unless allow Jesus to invade our space and change our lives personally. Our prayer will continue to be that Jesus will be more than a name and a historically figure, but someone who is alive and active within our lives.

Starting this Wednesday night our “Discover Your Shape” series begins @ Dock@1810 at The Warehouse. This 6 week series will hopefully lead students on a journey to discover what God has shaped them for and help them realize that they are a masterpiece

created by God. Wednesday nights has shifted to be more of a student lead worship service. We want students to take ownership and lead thei

r peers to have an intimate relationship with God. This is a great environment to invite friends.

O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know my every thought when far away. You know what I’m going to say even before I say it. I can never escape from your Spirit. I can never get away from your presence. Even in the darkness I can’t hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are both alike to you. You made all the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex. Your workmanship is marvelous and how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion and I was woven together in the dark of the womb (Psalm 139).”

Holy Week

As I sit here in the office at Rolling Hills I can’t help but to sit back and watch all the activity that is taking place. This is certainly a big weekend in the life of our church, well, THE CHURCH in general. This weekend is not only a weekend to remember, but it is a weekend to reflect and look forward. We remember the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, reflect on the journey that lead us to our own experience with Christ, and look forward to living a life in communion with God.

Easter weekend is always busy, especially with family, friends, egg hunts, and travel. Just remember one thing, all of those things are important , but pale in comparison of the life journey of Jesus. We can easily miss the meaning of Easter because we are busy trying to do Easter, if that makes since.

At Rolling Hills we have ways you can focus your time and attention. You can attend…

Maundy Thursday – Seder Experience: 6:30-7:30pm
Good Friday – “Via Crucis” or “Way to the Cross”: 6-8pm, this experience will take an hour
Saturday – Eggstravaganza: 10am-12pm, there will be a teaching for children
Sunday – Easter Services: 9:30am & 11pm

Come to one or to all. The purpose of each event is to focus our time and attention on Jesus’ life, death, burial, and resurrection.

Remember, this couldn’t be a better time to step out of your comfort zone and invite someone to an Easter service. People will be more receptive due to the time of the year. If you are sitting in your office, classroom, doctor’s office, etc. and you think it could be a good opportunity, don’t hesitate, go for it.

Fall Retreat on the Mind

Student Ministry Fall Retreat Oct. 8-10

http://www.vimeo.com/14681694

Check out our video from DOCK@1810 on September 1 and find out the TOP 10 reasons why you should come to the Fall Retreat!

As Fall Retreat 2010 is quickly approaching, I can’t help but remember last year’s Fall Retreat where I experienced one of the funniest and possibly most embarrassing moments of my life.  For those of you that weren’t there let me fill you in…..

Intern Alex VS. “THE BLOB”

It was an average afternoon at Camp Widjiwagan.  We had just finished kayaking on the lake and now it was time for “THE BLOB” and the ridiculously high water slides (which if I’m honest, I might or might not have avoided due to a slight fear of activities that could result in death…ha)  However, in light of the events that occurred later that day, the slides definitely would have been a much better choice.

Anyway, so like everyone else I was in the water waiting for a turn to try “THE BLOB.”  Little did I know there was apparently a rule that said you could only blob someone who was within 30 pounds of your weight.  So naturally I subtracted a good 20 pounds from my actual weight because let’s be honest, I wasn’t very enthusiastic about walking around and shouting my weight for all to hear.  Well it turned out that only Nic Allen was within 30 pounds of my “weight.”  So we climbed the tower and off we went.  As much as I’d like to say so, the rest definitely wasn’t history.  As soon as I jumped from the platformed and landed on “THE BLOB” I knew something was wrong.  While I had definitely landed in the right spot, I immediately began the struggle to actually stay on “THE BLOB.”  But I wasn’t going to give up easily so I held on for dear life and tried to stay in the middle as I slowly worked my way toward the spot where I would inevitably be launched joyfully through the air.  Unfortunately my progress was……slow.  I spent the next 15 minutes literally rolling back and forth on “THE BLOB.”  At this point I couldn’t see how making it to the end was even possible when I was having trouble just to stay on.

Now you might be thinking, “oh that’s not THAT bad.”  But let me tell you, when a large group of students (many of which were not even from our group) start chanting your name it becomes slightly embarrassing.  Now if I had been a star athlete about to make the game winning shot then I probably would have been encouraged by people chanting my name but when you’re trying to roll across an oversized ballon filled with air on a lake surrounded by people I’ve never meant, I can assure you it’s very embarrassing.

I hope to see everyone out this year for our Fall Retreat.  I can’t promise that I’ll have another run-in with “THE BLOB” (one time was enough) but I can say that you won’t regret coming!

Peace in the Middle East,

-Intern Alex
